How do I add a lock pattern?

Hey all!

I just saw a friend of mine had a lock pattern (or is it called a keypad?) on his Xperia play and I wanted to get one on mine too. Not really because I'm worried about someone stealing it but just because I think it looks cool. Okay I had to admit that.... any who... I really want one of those pattern locks with the circles you activate. Is that a widget or is there a way to just set it or download it?

Thanks!

Rooting ASUS Eee PAD Transformer TF101

The Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 is a great tablet that many gadget lovers have rated as one of the bests in market. The tablet comes with many great features and the Android OS. If you have one and want to raise the usability then you can think of rooting it. The procedure to root is rather easy if you follow the steps as they are. Let me tell you about the rooting procedures.Things to do before rooting Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101

The very first thing you need to do, before rooting, is to take back ups of everything from the pad memory. Start with the media files as it’s easy to take back up of them. Just move the media files to your pad’s SD memory card and they will be safe. The internet and other settings of your Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 can be noted in a paper and then you can re input them once the rooting is completed. The thing that you require the most is the contact list. Use the sync facility of the pad to save all the contacts in the Google server. You can retrieve the list from there later. If you have important SMSs in your pad then use any SMS back up app. There are many available in the Android Marketplace.Make sure that you completely charge your Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 battery to have an uninterrupted rooting process. You need to use a computer for the rooting process. You must have Windows XP or higher version on the computer and the USB driver must be updated. Keep the antivirus program deactivated while you are rooting the pad.Have the USB cable of your Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 with you before you start to root the pad.

Procedure to root Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101

Download the rooting package zip file, for this pad, on your computer. The zip file contains the executable file for rooting the pad. Extract it on your desktop.Locate the file named Brks_rootkit_v7 from the extracted files. Run this file and it will open a new screen on your desktop. The screen will have the proper instructions for you. Keep following the instructions until you get an option to choose action. Select Install drivers option and then connect your Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 with the computer by using the USB cable.Choose the 32 bit or 64 bit driver option, depending on your computer. After that you have to select the option that says Backup and ROOT.Once you select it, the rooting process of your tablet will start. You may have to wait for some time for the rooting process to be completed.Once the rooting is completed, your Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 will restart automatically. It will restart rooted.

See if you can find the super user icon which looks like a skull. If the icon is there then your Asus Transformer Eee Pad transformer TF 101 is rooted. Otherwise, retry the entire rooting process.

How sturdy is Xperia play?

I wanted to get a new Xperia play and was doing some looking around and ran across this video.

http://www.youtube.com/v/AQFS4y9ycrU&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3

It looks like the screen is really flimsy and might brake. If Im going to be droping like $500 I dont want something that will break off after a couple of weeks. Anyone noticed this? Anyone know if this is a problem with the phones?

How the gaming on the xperia play?

I've had mixed feelings about the play since I picked one up accouple of months ago. For the gaves that are out on the system the controls are great. But thats the problem... there just arent that many games out on the system. It's mostly a licensing thing but still I was expecting more. That being said there was a recent announcement of 150 new games coming out for the system so there should be somethign out there for him. If hes a PS3 fan Deadspace was jut released and the performance on the Play is great. -----

Create update.zip with Rom Factory Tool

rom factory

There is no full stop in the development for android devices, while most of the developments falls in the category of roms and kernels, there is always a gem fall into our lap to surprise us. Here is the ever popular Fruitcake Maker aka Rom Factory which is a popular tool that has made its rounds around many popular and unpopular android devices over the last several months. The tool is gaining popularity as a fun and useful tool for devs and users alike. However it was only a matter of time before this tool made its way for the Motorola triumph and is now making its way to the better and bigger phones like Motorola Atrix 4G and the Samsung Galaxy SII.

For those who don’t know what Rom Factory is, XDA Senior Member samcripp has created a tool that will allow users to create a picture perfect.img from your boot and system partition and will make a fully functional flashable update.zip out of them. What comes into my mind with this that devs and users alike can develop a rom and edit too and the most out of it is users can create a backup in the form of flashable zips.

Here is a list of supported devices:-

olympus (atrix), sunfire (photon), triumph, WX435, fb0 (triumph), p999 (lg g2x), p990 (lg o2x), p970 (lg optimus black), ace (htc desired hd), pyramid (htc sensation), galaxys2, GT-I9100, GT-I9100M, GT-I9100T, SGH-I777, SGH-I727, hercules, crespo (nexus s), crespo4g (nexus s 4g), toro (cdma galaxy nexus), maguro (gsm galaxy nexus)

As the tool makes a copy of the /system partition, any modification such as themes or tweaks will be copied as well so the developers can mod their rom and then use Rom Factory to make a rom with all the modifications and tweaks ready for flashing. Likewise when a user gets their customized rom in their way, the will be only a few clicks away for making it ready to re-flash any time.

For more download links, screenshot, changelog and everything else head over to xda Atrix 4G thread.

All in One LeeDeroid Tweak Mod Pack for HTC Sensation & Evo 3D

Every now and then, there is a tweak, a mod or a tool available that most users can’t imagine of not having.  Tweaks like Theme Chooser on CyanogenMod or the Rosie re-map function on HTC Devices; modifications like these are so useful that they become the main or common part in the Rom feature list. Same in the case with LeeDroid tweaks which a mod pack by XDA Recognized Developer j4n87 and has become so popular that most of the Rom Devs has added the tweak mod to their Roms and those who haven’t have been urged by their users to do so.

The tweak mod pack is available for the HTC Sensation and both the GSM and CDMA versions of HTC Evo 3D, allows user to apply a wide range of mods from the battery tweaks with MIUI battery bar to wipe cache. Here’s a list of features available for just the Rosie Launcher:-

toggle between normal/supersmooth and ultra smooth rosieunlock animation toggle(annoying carousell animation, each time you unlock)5 column app drawer togglepaginated app drawer toggleTransparancy toggle

However above is the feature list of only Rosie Launcher and there are others out there for Status bar, lock screen and advance tweaks. The full list of modifications and tweaks is truly long and impressive and it’s very highly recommended that users of the Sensation and EVO 3D at least check it out.

To check out LeeDeroid Tweaks head over to either the EVO 3D GSM or CDMA threads, and for those with ICS on their HTC Sensation, head over to the Sensation thread.  Make it sure to create a backup before flashing, and get ready to enjoy one of the biggest single tweak packs out there.

can i run emulators on the xperia play without having to root the phone (and other root questions)

im thinking more of n64 emulation and the popular 16bit emulators, and possibly mame 32
mostly at the moment tho i like the idea of a ps one emulator if anything just so i can have gran turismo 1 and 2 in my pocket.

but as i said i dont know whats out there and how much can be said on in this forum regarding xperia play hacks and cracked apps..

i know emulation is ok to talk about and legal so no problems there ;) alltho what will run on a unmodifyed play is another thing i need to learn,

finally im unsure about rooting at this moment in time unless there is a 1click option or somthing as there does not seem to be a guarnteed way to recover andriod if it goes bad,, for example the way you can restore a iphone there is no danger really in a jailbrake

Shattered Screen on Sony Xperia Play by Verizon

So, I accidentally shattered the screen on my phone and I JUST got it. It is so bad that I can't even use it...or I would just deal with it.I just watched a video on youtube and I saw that it has like a front plate...I guess...In front of the screen...attached to the front black border. It isn't that part that needs replaced, it's the glass. There aren't any places around me that can fix it so my question is what parts do I need to fix it and if anyone can link me to a video of how to take it apart AND put it back together.

Thank You!!

Homescreen black space... what to do?

Hmmm odd... one thing you could try would be to delete the homescreen cashe in your prefrences. That will probably take care of the problem but it will also rest the homescreen to the factory settings. I dont know what your homescreen looks like but it probably shouldnt be too hard to get it back to the way you want it. Hope it works out for you! -----

Power management for the Honeycomb tablets

The modern day Android smart phones and tablets come with mind blowing great features. These features make the Android devices better than any other devices of that kind. Those features include Wi-Fi, GPS, app support and many more. These facilities make us use the devices more and that leads to less battery life. The Honeycomb tablets are the best tablets available and they come with some great features that make the experience better for you. This is the reason why these tablets tend to power out soon. We end up charging it more than once a day. That’s not something recommended for the batter. The uses of social networking sites and YouTube have increased a lot in last few years. These tablets support these facilities and you end up using them more than normal. It’s very important to save battery life and not to charge it more than once a day. These things will increase the over all battery life your tablet. Saving battery life and using it for a longer time is actually easy in Honeycomb tablets. You just need to keep some basic things in mind and use the proper tools. Let me tell you how you can manage power of these tablets.

Procedure to increase battery life in Honeycomb tablets

Find the Apps option on your home screen and select it. From the new options, select Settings. Choose the About tablet option now.Find the select the Battery usage option. You will find detailed information about apps and features, of your Honeycomb tablets, which are using the battery power. You can find out which app or features are using what amount of battery power. You will see that the display screen of your tablet is using most of the battery power. Controlling that is actually easy. You just need to lower the brightness of the screen. It will not decrease the display quality but it will surely save a lot of battery life. Lower down the screen timeout time to save more battery power. Many of the apps and accounts of your Honeycomb tablets continue to sync even when you don’t need it to. That burns a lot of battery power and so you must turn of auto sync for apps and accounts that are not needed.Once you do that, you must remember to sync or update those accounts and apps at least once a week. Honeycomb tablets can work better with updated programs. There are many programs that continue to run in the background even when you don’t use them. Find out which programs are running unnecessarily on your tablet and close them.Your Honeycomb tablets surely come with Wi-Fi facility and its no wonder that you use that a lot. Wi-Fi allows you first wireless networking. The problem with Wi-Fi is that it doesn’t turn off itself even when you are not using it. Wi-Fi tends to search for networks and that burns a lot of battery. Turn it of when you don’t need it.

A restricted use will work best for saving battery in Honeycomb tablets.

Finding IMEI number on the Xperia Play, rooting first step

One of the first steps to rooting your Xperia Play is finding the IMEI number of your phone. For those still looking for it you can either find it by going to settings> telephone info > Status (it should be around the 10th number down) or by entering *#06# on your keypad like you are making a call. -----

Screen Doesn't Turn On Randomly

I don't if anyone else has had this problem but my Xperia Play is doing really weird stuff. For some reason, the phone's screen just refuses to turn on from time to time.

every once in a while the phone just goes dark while the phone is on. it responds to calls and everything, but the screen just won't turn off. the only way to solve the problem is pull the battery out and back in again. then it works fine.

anybody else in the same boat?

Give iPhone 4S an inferiority complex – meet the rock stars of our “Android”

The iPhone started off the cell phone revolution. But we have come a long way from that. Phones today are power-horses. With 1GHz processors, dual-cores, discrete graphics processing; we sure have come a long way since the introduction of the iPhone.

However just like the computer world has always made a distinction between the Mac and PC, the mobile world too has come to define smart phones into iPhones and the “rest”.

Android is probably the only OS which is the closest into being a serious competitor to iOS.

The primary reason why people prefer Mountain View’s OS is its tight integration with the Google ecosystem. All that a user has to do is login. Bingo! Everything is done thereon. From contacts syncing to emails to Picasa albums to YouTube videos, everything is synced straightaway. Such a tight integration is not possible even for Apple’s ecosystem; the reason being that it’s not as huge as Google’s.

Apps! While Apple might have introduced the concept of an online store to buy applications, they stopped there. Google went one step ahead and made uploading an app as easy as simply putting it up online. Apple maintains a strict control over its apps whereas the Android market lets anybody upload apps for a measly one-time payment of 25$. Apple charges developers a yearly 99$ fee and a Mac is compulsory to develop. Such archaic rules are why Apple has such a small market share.

The iPhone is the only phone to be running iOS. While this might make developers happy, it makes end customers sad. What if someone desires a bigger screen? Or NFC maybe? Or how about a faster processor. None of this is possible with an iPhone. With an Apple device you are at the mercy of Apple.

Mobile payments are Android exclusive too. With Google and Nokia touting NFC as the next “big thing”, it probably is a big thing. With the convenience of just “tapping” the phone, Google has shot ahead by light years when it comes to this one department. It will take Apple substantial time (and a new release of the iPhone) to implement this feature whereas with Android it’s just a matter of a software update or a new handset.

The Android notification bar is simply superb. In fact it’s so great that iOS 5 had to copy it. Who would’ve known that all it would take to simplify things is a simple pull-down notification bar. The interface of Android too is miles ahead of iOS. With custom launchers increasing every day, iOS seriously needs a refresh to stay in the game. The simple tile interface just doesn’t do it anymore.

True multitasking is something Android has been doing for a while. It was only recently that Apple finally realized the importance and decided to implement it. With an iPhone this was simply not possible until recently. Android’s always been a champ when it comes to multitasking.

While iOS may have been a brilliant mobile OS when it was released, the tile interface and the rigid control of apps just doesn’t help it anymore. Android’s come a long way too and Android 4.0 only ups the ante. The iPhone’s getting the inferiority complex already, and with the new breed of Android super-phones (Galaxy Nexus, Motorola RAZR, HTC Sensation etc), the iPhone really has a lot to catching up to do.

Facebook: We’ll Take “Legal Action” Against Employers Asking For Your Password

A few days ago, headlines around the world reported how an increasing number of prospective job applicants like one Justin Bassett, a New York City statistician, were being asked to hand over their Facebook usernames and passwords, the proverbial keys to the kingdom, so that the employer could login and take a look around for signs the person isn’t a suitable candidate.

Outrage was immediate and widespread, with many calling it a shocking breach of personal privacy. ACLU attorney Catherine Crump compared the practice to opening up the mail in your mailbox to see if there was anything of interest.

“It’s an invasion of privacy for private employers to insist on looking at people’s private Facebook pages as a condition of employment or consideration in an application process,” she wrote  in a blog post. “People are entitled to their private lives. You’d be appalled if your employer insisted on opening up your postal mail to see if there was anything of interest inside. It’s equally out of bounds for an employer to go on a fishing expedition through a person’s private social media account.”

Late last week Facebook responded to the news, calling it “distressing” and “alarming.”

“This practice undermines the privacy expectations and the security of both the user and the user’s friends,” says the company. “It also potentially exposes the employer who seeks this access to unanticipated legal liability.”

It’s the latter part of that statement that should make employers weary of continuing to coerce job applicants into giving permission to violate their privacy.

“As a user, you shouldn’t be forced to share your private information and communications just to get a job,” adds the company. “And as the friend of a user, you shouldn’t have to worry that your private information or communications will be revealed to someone you don’t know and didn’t intend to share with just because that user is looking for a job.  That’s why we’ve made it a violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to share or solicit a Facebook password.”

Today Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) entered the controversy by calling on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch a federal investigation into the matter.

“I am alarmed and outraged by rapidly and widely spreading employer practices seeking access to Facebook passwords or confidential information on other social networks,” said Blumenthal in a press release. “A ban on these practices is necessary to stop unreasonable and unacceptable invasions of privacy. An investigation by the Department of Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will help remedy ongoing intrusions and coercive practices, while we draft new statutory protections to clarify and strengthen the law. With few exceptions, employers do not have the need or the right to demand access to applicants’ private, password-protected information.”

Blumenthal and Schumer called the practice a  ”grave intrusion” into personal privacy that could set a dangerous precedent for personal privacy and online privacy, make it more difficult for Americans to get jobs, and expose employers to discrimination claims.

“Employers have no right to ask job applicants for their house keys or to read their diaries – why should they be able to ask them for their Facebook passwords and gain unwarranted access to a trove of private information about what we like, what messages we send to people, or who we are friends with?” added Schumer. “In an age where more and more of our personal information – and our private social interactions – are online, it is vital that all individuals be allowed to determine for themselves what personal information they want to make public and protect personal information from their would-be employers. This is especially important during the job-seeking process, when all the power is on one side of the fence. Before this disturbing practice becomes widespread, we must have an immediate investigation into whether the practice violates federal law – I’m confident the investigation will show it does. Facebook agrees, and I’m sure most Americans agree, that employers have no business asking for your Facebook password.”

Let’s hope the DoJ and EEOC side with job applicants and prevent employers from demanding they hand over the keys to their social networking lives.

Stay tuned.

8 Top Chrome Productivity Extensions

Working productively is one of the most challenging aspects of work – sometimes even more so than the content of the work itself. When we don’t work productively, we pay for it with what would otherwise be our free time, and sometimes financially too. Even though most people know this, sitting down and completing a task or project is still difficult, even more so when we know Facebook is just a few clicks away. This list of Chrome productivity extensions is designed to keep you on the straight and narrow so you can stop feeling guilty about your work, and start enjoying all the extra spare time you’ll have.

Discipline

Nothing beats productivity issues like some good old discipline. When you’re in the throes of productivity problems, however, you might need a third party to take control and instill some discipline into your work situation for you. Luckily, Chrome has produced several extensions that take the tough love approach, and assist you in focusing on the task at hand.

Nanny for Chrome enables you to block certain URLS at certain times of the day. As well as specific websites, you can also enter expressions to block websites containing certain individual words. By adding domains to the whitelisted websites, you can still access them, but Nanny will track how much time you spend there.

Stay Focused is similar to Nanny for Chrome, except it enables you to limit how long you spend on certain websites. For example, if you want a half hour Facebook break, you can set the Stay Focused timer to 30 minutes, after which Stay Focused will block the site for the rest of the day, and you will be forced to return to work.

If you’re a fan of the Pomodoro Technique but need it enforced online, try Strict Pomodoro. The basic principle of the Pomodoro Technique is to work with focus for 25 minutes, then have a five minute break. Strict Pomodoro encourages this by blocking websites that aren’t conducive to work for the duration of the 25 minutes, then unblocking them for five minutes, before the whole cycle starts again. The extension is customizable; you can input blacklisted URLS, the amount of time you need to block them, and how much time you’re allowed to spend on them during your break.

Web Tools

The web is a wonderful creation, but it’s easy to get lost among tabs, browsers and visual clutter. If you find yourself constantly getting distracted by adverts, pop-ups and shiny things online, you’re less likely to work at your optimal level.

For times when you need to get that report, blog post, or proposal written, Write Space comes into its own. This extension creates a full-screen text editor that lives in your Chrome web browser but is available online or offline. It’s designed to minimize the number of on-screen distractions you encounter, and increase your writing output. Write Space comes with additional features that outshine even some word processing programs, including a persistent auto-save feature, live word count statistics, and a customizable appearance.

Session Buddy also tidies up your screen by organizing your Chrome tabs and browser windows into an easy-to-manage list. You can save sessions to restore later, or use the extension’s automatic capture feature to restore your 10 most recent windows in the event of a browser crash. Particularly useful for large projects that require lost of research, Session Buddy enables you to create named lists of browser tabs so you can access them with ease at a later date.

If you frequently use two websites at once, and find it distracting to switch back and forth between tabs, Split Screen can help. This extension enables you to view two webpages at the same time on the same page, making it particularly useful for research. The extension also comes with a notepad feature, which saves whatever you write ready for your next split screen session.

Effective time management is one of the most easily avoidable aspects of productivity. No one wants to be faced with the ugly truth of how much time they spend looking at cats, or aimlessly browsing Wikipedia. Knowledge, however, is power, and to work productively, we need to be aware of how we’re spending our time.

Time Tracker is a simple yet effective extension that logs how much time you spend on individual sites. Useful if you want to know how long your “10 minute” Twitter breaks really last, Time Tracker logs time spent by detecting keyboard or mouse movement.

Similar to Time Tracker, but with the added element of shame, Rescue Time Chrome Productivity Meter also sits in the background and records which websites you look at and for how long, automatically suspending tracking if you don’t use your keyboard for over two minutes. Where Rescue Time pips Time Tracker, however, is that at the end of the day it gives you a productivity score, and tells you whether you are less or more productive than most people. The extension calculates this score using collective data from Rescue Time users around the world, and you can customize which sites count as “productive” time and which don’t.

MPAA Pressures Website into Censoring ZeroPaid Reporter

CNet has noted that the MPAA is targeting several cyberlockers. The article says that the MPAA is targeting Putlocker, Wupload, Depositfiles, FileServe, and MediaFire. Some of these services are being used to host my own music I want people to download, listen and share for free. That is my choice. I create the music, I have the right to distribute my music as I see fit.

Already, I’ve personally been censored by American prosecutors on behalf of several rightsholders after the takedown of MegaUpload. After the takedown, I’ve personally decided to upload my music to several cyberlockers as part of my anti-censorship tactics against rightsholders thanks to the help of ZeroPaid member Napho.

Now, one of the websites I’ve used to host my music has decided to bow to pressure and block all attempts by others to download my music for free. WUpload is now displaying the following message every time someone tries to download my music for free:

Announcement: All sharing has been disabled. Wupload is not a file sharing site. If you uploaded a file, only you can download it and it can’t be shared with anyone else.

Here are links to my music that are now functionally dead:

Possessed
Phantoms of London
Startin’ Fresh

This is the second time I’ve been censored by rightsholders. Sure, you could say that it’s no big deal if I keep uploading my music to other cyberlockers for ease of download, but that’s not the point. The point is, rightsholders are deciding how their competition is allowed to express legitimate forms of free speech. Does Pepsi decide where Coca Cola is allowed to sell pop in the US? Does Fox news decide what CBC is allowed to report on? Does Toyota decide where Ford is allowed to sell trucks? If not, why is the MPAA deciding where I’m allowed to post my music online for free? This is why I have a problem with these shutdowns. Its the idea that I am being censored. This is the second time I am being censored by competition and I’m pretty sure it won’t be the last time either.
